How Genuine PDF Compression Works
PDF (Portable Document Format) files contain a rich collection of embedded resources: vector shapes, font subsets, content streams, and raster bitmap images. Here is how our dual-engine architecture optimizes your document without corrupting text or formatting.
The engine inspects the PDF object tree, detecting text content streams, font dictionaries, and embedded image XObjects.
Embedded JPEG (DCTDecode) images are re-sampled to target resolutions, while uncompressed streams are compacted using high-efficiency FlateDecode.
Redundant metadata and whitespace are cleaned. The cross-reference (xref) table is recalculated from scratch to produce a 100% compliant PDF.
Compression Mode Comparison
| Mode | Visual Quality | Typical Size Reduction | Image Resolution | Recommended Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low Compression | Maximum (Near Lossless) | 20% – 40% | Up to 2000px (300 DPI) | Legal briefs, contracts, architectural blueprints, print flyers. |
| Recommended (Balanced) | High Quality | 40% – 70% | Up to 1500px (150 DPI) | Email attachments, office reports, slides, web downloads. |
| High Compression | Medium Quality | 60% – 85% | Up to 1000px (72–96 DPI) | Upload portals with strict limits (under 1MB/2MB), mobile reading. |
Why Document Type Affects Compression Results
Compression percentages are never fixed because they directly depend on the internal composition of each PDF:
- Scanned & Image-Heavy PDFs: Documents created by office flatbed scanners or phone camera scanners store entire pages as high-resolution uncompressed or low-compression photos. These PDFs consistently achieve the largest reductions (often 50% to 80%+).
- Vector & Text-Only PDFs: Documents exported directly from Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or LaTeX contain vector fonts and compact instructions. Because text commands take minimal disk space, reduction percentages will be modest (10% to 30%).
- Pre-Optimized PDFs: Documents already processed by professional publishing tools or ghostscript may already be optimal. Our engine checks this automatically: if no further compression is possible without quality destruction, we inform you and deliver the authentic file untouched.
